I remember thinking, “Huh, maybe I *should* get rid of all that stuff I haven’t touched in years.” The idea of a clean, uncluttered space – and mind – was incredibly appealing. I mean, who *doesn’t* want less stress and more freedom? It’s kind of like the promise of that magic diet pill, except instead of shedding pounds, you’re shedding, well, *stuff*. The initial appeal was definitely the aesthetic. Those perfectly curated minimalist apartments on Instagram? Total eye candy. But then I started thinking about the actual *lifestyle*. Was it really feasible for someone like me, a self-confessed sentimental hoarder (I’m working on it!), to actually embrace minimalism? I had my doubts. But the promise of a simpler, less chaotic life kept pulling me in.

My (Failed) Attempt at a Minimalist Closet

So, I decided to start small: my closet. Ugh, what a mess! It was overflowing with clothes I hadn’t worn in ages, impulse buys that didn’t fit right, and the dreaded “someday” outfits. I spent an entire Saturday pulling everything out, creating piles for donation, selling, and maybe even keeping. The “maybe” pile was, unsurprisingly, huge. I remember trying on this one dress I bought on sale years ago. Still had the tags on! I’d convinced myself I’d wear it “someday” to a fancy event. But honestly, when was that even going to happen? And even if it *did*, would I even like the dress anymore? That’s when the doubts started creeping in. What if I regretted getting rid of something? What if I *needed* that specific item someday? The what-ifs were endless. I did manage to get rid of a fair amount of stuff, a whole garbage bag full, which felt surprisingly good. But the closet? Still felt… full. I think I realized that my definition of “minimal” was vastly different from the perfectly curated Instagram closets. I mean, some people only own like, ten items of clothing. Seriously?

The Reality of “Needs” vs. “Wants”

One of the core principles of minimalism is distinguishing between needs and wants. Sounds simple, right? Not really. It’s surprisingly difficult to objectively assess what you actually *need* versus what you just *want*. I mean, do I *need* that third pair of black boots? Probably not. But do I *want* them? Absolutely! And that’s where things get tricky. I think, for me, it comes down to a sort of cost-benefit analysis. Is the joy I get from owning something worth the space it takes up, the money I spent on it, and the mental energy I dedicate to it? Sometimes, the answer is yes. I love my books, even though they take up a ton of space. They bring me joy, and I actually use them. But that impulse-bought gadget I used once and then forgot about? That’s a definite no. I messed up a bit with the gadgets. I bought one of those fancy blenders that I thought was a need because I was going to make smoothies everyday. I used it for a week, and now it is in the garage. Total waste. Was I the only one confused by this?

Finding My Own Version of Minimalism

So, where does that leave me? Am I a minimalist? Definitely not. But have I incorporated some minimalist principles into my life? Absolutely. I’ve become more mindful of my purchases. I think twice (or even three times) before buying something new. I’ve started decluttering more regularly, even if it’s just a small amount at a time. And I’ve learned to appreciate the things I already have. I think the key is to find a version of minimalism that works for you. It’s not about living in a completely empty apartment or owning only ten items of clothing. It’s about being intentional with your possessions and creating a space that feels calm, functional, and joyful. For me, that means having a slightly-less-cluttered closet, a curated collection of books, and maybe, just maybe, only two pairs of black boots. It’s a journey, not a destination, you know?

The Unexpected Benefits I Didn’t See Coming

Honestly, I started this minimalist experiment thinking it was all about aesthetics and decluttering. But what surprised me was how much it impacted my mental well-being. I found that having less clutter around me actually made me feel less stressed and more focused. Who even knows what’s next? It’s kind of like a domino effect. When your physical space is organized, your mental space tends to follow suit. I also realized that I was spending less time shopping and more time doing things I actually enjoyed, like reading, spending time with friends, and exploring new hobbies.
