Minimalism: Can Owning Less Actually Make You Happier?

Honestly, I used to think minimalism was just some trendy thing rich people did. Like, “Oh, look at me, I only own three white t-shirts and a single, perfectly-shaped succulent.” But the funny thing is, I’ve been feeling… weighed down lately. Not physically, but mentally. Too much stuff, too many options, too much… everything. So, I decided to dip my toe into the minimalist waters. And wow, it’s been a journey.

My Cluttered Life: A Confession

Okay, so picture this: my apartment. It’s… cozy. That’s the polite way of putting it. The less polite way? It’s a disaster. Clothes piled on chairs, books overflowing shelves, kitchen gadgets I bought on a whim and never used. It’s a testament to my bad shopping habits and inability to throw anything away. I’m a self-confessed hoarder, but not like, “I need to keep this newspaper from 1987” hoarder. More like a “Oh, this might be useful someday!” hoarder. Which, let’s be real, it never is.

I mean, who even needs five different types of spatulas? Or twenty pairs of shoes, half of which I haven’t worn in years? I was drowning in stuff. And it was starting to affect my mental health. I felt stressed, overwhelmed, and constantly guilty about all the things I wasn’t using. Sound familiar to anyone? My breaking point came a few weeks ago when I couldn’t find my keys. I spent a solid hour tearing apart my apartment, only to find them buried under a pile of old magazines. Ugh, what a mess! That’s when I knew something had to change.

Diving into the Minimalist Lifestyle

So, I started researching minimalism. And, surprisingly, it’s not just about owning as few things as possible. It’s about intentionality. It’s about curating your life so that you only surround yourself with things that bring you joy, add value, or serve a purpose. Basically, Marie Kondo, but less… intense. At least that’s how I’m approaching it.

I downloaded a decluttering checklist I found online, feeling excited, and started small. The junk drawer. Oh god, the junk drawer. Pens that didn’t work, random screws, rubber bands, business cards from people I’d never met, and enough paperclips to build a small bridge. It took me an hour, but I managed to purge it. And you know what? It felt amazing! It was like a tiny weight had been lifted off my shoulders. This minimalism thing… maybe there was something to it after all.

If you’re feeling brave and want to tackle your own clutter, there are tons of resources available online. Websites like “The Minimalists” have great tips and inspiration.

The Challenges of Letting Go

Okay, so decluttering the junk drawer was easy. But then came the clothes. Oh, the clothes. This is where things got… emotional. I had clothes that I hadn’t worn in years, but I couldn’t bear to part with them. “What if I need this someday?” I’d tell myself. Or, “But this was so expensive!” The truth is, I was holding onto these clothes for sentimental reasons. They represented a past version of myself, a past experience, or a future self that I aspired to be. A future self who wears that sparkly sequin dress to fancy parties… which, let’s be honest, isn’t happening anytime soon.

It’s kind of like breaking up with an old friend. You know it’s not serving you anymore, but it’s hard to let go of the memories. I think I literally sat on my bed surrounded by clothes for two hours, agonizing over what to keep and what to donate. I ended up using the “KonMari method” – holding each item and asking myself if it sparked joy. And you know what? A lot of it didn’t. It sparked guilt, regret, or just plain indifference. And those items went into the donation pile. This was much harder than that drawer full of old paper clips.

The Unexpected Perks of Owning Less

So, I’m still in the process of decluttering. It’s a slow, ongoing project. But I’m already noticing some unexpected perks. First of all, cleaning is so much easier! I mean, obviously, right? But it’s a game changer. I spend less time tidying up and more time doing things I actually enjoy. Like, I don’t know, reading a book or going for a walk or just staring blankly at the ceiling – whatever floats your boat.

And I’m also saving money. I’m less tempted to buy things I don’t need because I’m more conscious of what I already have. It’s like my brain has finally woken up and said, “Hey, maybe you don’t need another pair of black boots. You already have three!” Who knew minimalism could be good for my wallet? What a concept.

Finding Happiness in Simplicity? Maybe.

So, am I happier now that I’m embracing minimalism? It’s hard to say definitively. It’s only been a few weeks. But I definitely feel lighter. Less burdened. Less stressed. I’m more intentional about what I bring into my life, and that feels good. I’m also more grateful for the things I already have. I think that’s a big part of it. Appreciating what you have instead of always chasing after the next shiny object.

The journey is far from over. I still have a lot of decluttering to do. And I’m sure there will be moments of weakness when I’m tempted to buy something I don’t need. But for now, I’m committed to this minimalist experiment. Who knows, maybe I’ll actually become one of those people with three white t-shirts and a perfectly-shaped succulent. But probably not. I still like my colorful sweaters too much. Regardless, I’m learning, growing, and hopefully, getting a little bit closer to finding my own definition of happiness. And maybe, just maybe, that definition includes a little less stuff.
